In the movie The Notebook (2004), an elderly man named Duke reads a romantic story to an old woman who suffers from memory loss. The story is set in the late 1930s and revolves around the love between Allie Hamilton, a wealthy seventeen-year-old, and Noah Calhoun, a local worker. The two meet at a carnival and quickly fall in love. However, their romance is disapproved of by Allie's parents due to their differing social classes, and they are forced to separate.
Noah continues to write letters to Allie, but her mother hides them, preventing her from receiving them. Three years later, as the United States enters World War II, Noah and his best friend enlist in the army, while Allie becomes an army nurse and meets a wealthy and handsome soldier named Lon Hammond.
