Holmblad, who owned and drove the lorry, is found, tortured and murdered, and his house ransacked.

War photographer Robert Thuresson's work is being put on display in Ystad. American Sarah Lyell argues with the photographer before the exhibition and later is found dead, in possession of one of his photos. The case extends beyond Sweden as Wallander finds a motive for the death.

Lotta tells Wallander she was about to leave her insensitive husband for the priest and candid photos of her with Nordstrom are found,along with the murder weapon in Peter Unell's house. As he stands trial for murder Wallander is convinced he has been framed and sets out to prove it.

Wallander interviews a couple about their stolen dog. The following day the couple are tortured and brutally murdered. Similar deaths follow and Wallander and his team have to find out whether there is an underlying connection in the deaths and whether three missing army conscripts are involved.
