In the 2009 film Leningrad, set in 1941, Nazi Germany invades the Soviet Union and quickly besieges the city of Leningrad. As foreign journalists are being evacuated, Kate Davies, a journalist, is presumed dead and misses her chance to escape on a plane. Left alone in the city, Kate finds herself in need of help and is aided by a young and idealistic police officer named Nina Tsvetnova.

Kate and Nina form an unlikely partnership as they navigate the harsh realities of war and fight for their own survival, as well as the survival of the people trapped in the besieged city. They face numerous challenges and obstacles, including scarcity of food and supplies, constant danger from bombings and attacks, and the oppressive presence of Nazi forces.
